Therapeutic Approaches

Brio Psychology offers a range of therapeutic approaches tailored to your individual needs.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT recognises the role of multiple systems within a person that contribute to their mental health and wellbeing. It is a practical approach that aims to help people overcome the symptoms that they are experiencing by developing skills that can be applied to current and future stressors. CBT considers cognitions (thoughts) and behaviour as critical in determining and changing psychological states.  There is substantial research evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of CBT in treating a range of conditions including mood and anxiety disorders.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a therapeutic approach that targets unhelpful patterns of behaviour including emotional dysregulation, substance use, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, binge-eating and high conflict relationships. Originally developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, research supports the effectiveness of DBT in treating other conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use disorders and eating disorders. DBT can help people to manage symptoms, improve their coping capabilities and support individuals to enhance their environment.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

PCIT was developed for the treatment of a broad range of child behaviours including hyperactivity, defiance and conduct problems. It combines behavioural approaches, relationship-building skills and social learning theory for changing child behavioural problems. PCIT recognises the way childhood distress and behavioural problems can impact on the functioning of the entire family system. It differs from other therapeutic approaches by addressing family interaction patterns and strengthening the parent-child relationship.
